Understand the payment schedule.

Every contract should contain a payment schedule. Your potential contractor should have a specific system for this in place. Usually a small deposit or down payment that’s proportional to the project will be required. These funds allow your contractor to pay for permits, materials, and some of the labor associated with those items. Plus this solidifies the contractual agreement between you and the contractor. The amount typically ranges anywhere from ten to twenty-five percent of the project. Again, project type and size will be a factor. Usually after the initial down payment, additional payments are performance based (as is the case with Shay Bliss Renovations). A specific portion of the project must be completed in order to receive the next payment. Of course it goes without saying… never pay in cash. Always pay with check or credit card.
